That's the main reason why I like doing traditional over digital art (because I could never figure out how to do it properly on the computer D8).
1. draw a splashy,or wutev
2. select all
3. hit some random direction on the arrow key so that the little selecty ants circle the actual parts of the drawing and not the exterior of it.
4.now,get your overlay (in this case,a picture of the sky)and put it on a separate layer
5. select that layer with your overlay without deselecting your ants XD
6. invert the selection so that the outside of the splash is selected,now just delete.
if you did everything right,your overlay should be cut out in the shape of your splashys 83~
